If anyone has experienced the same bug I did last week, where most - if not all - of your neighbors disappear, I have found a work-around.

You have to remove your Google+ friends from any circles, add them back into the circle and then you can send them a new invite for the game.

Zombie Lane did restore a decent amount of my neighbors, but it seems as though I have had little interaction with them - none were responding to my requests, whereas before the bug I would get about an 80% response. After following the procedure explained above, I was able to restore that interaction.
